1 mark (−0.33)

A power system with two generators is shown in the figure below. The system (generators, buses and transmission lines) is protected by six overcurrent relays R ₁ to R ₆. Assuming a mix of directional and non-directional relays at appropriate locations, the remote backup relays for R ₄ are

  1. A
    R ₁, R ₂
  2. B
    R ₂, R ₆
  3. C
    R ₂, R ₅
  4. D
    R ₁, R ₆

Solution & Step-by-step Explanation

Given the network is:

image

In the given network,

R ₂, R ₄, and R ₅ are directional overcurrent relays. R ₁, R ₃and R ₆ are non-directional overcurrent relays.

For the fault on line 2 i.e. L ₂, R 3 and R 4 must be operated. If R ₄ is not operated then R ₁and R ₆ will operate.

Therefore, back up for R ₄are R 1and R 6

The relay R ₃is directly connected to relay R ₄, so that relay R ₃can’t provide remote backup.
