While the barcode concept was patented earlier, the first commercial barcode scanner system (using the Universal Product Code or UPC) was installed and used in June 1974 at a Marsh's supermarket in Troy, Ohio, where a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum became the first item ever scanned.
