The first session of the Indian National Congress (INC) took place from December 28 to December 31, 1885, at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay. It was attended by 72 delegates and was presided over by the prominent Bengali barrister Womesh Chander Banerjee (W.C. Bonnerjee). The foundational meeting was organized with the pivotal assistance of retired civil servant Allan Octavian Hume.
