The southwest monsoon winds flow from the high-pressure area over the southern Indian Ocean towards the low-pressure heating center across the Indian subcontinent during summer. As they travel over thousands of kilometers of warm ocean water, they absorb massive amounts of moisture, bringing widespread precipitation to India between June and September.
