Sir William Ramsay was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904 in recognition of his discovery of the noble gases (argon, helium, neon, krypton, and xenon) in the air and establishing their position as a new group in the periodic system. His collaborator Lord Rayleigh received the Nobel Prize in Physics in the same year for his discovery of argon.
