India celebrated the Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) of its Independence on August 15, 1997. K. R. Narayanan assumed office as the 10th President of India on July 25, 1997, and was therefore the President during these landmark celebrations. He addressed the mid-night session of Parliament on August 14–15, 1997.
