Pneumatophores are specialized respiratory roots found in plants growing in waterlogged, anaerobic conditions or mangrove swamps (e.g., Rhizophora). They grow vertically upwards out of the water and mud (negatively geotropic) to take in oxygen from the atmosphere through small pores called lenticels.
