About five centuries ago, the Portuguese historian Domingos Paes called Hampi (Vijayanagara) the city of dreams. It was the capital of the rulers of the Sangama dynasty who laid the foundation of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1336 at the construction site of ancient Hampi. But it was Krishnadeva Raya (1509-1529) who adorned the capital with grand palaces and temples and extended the boundaries of the Vijayanagara Empire far and wide, making it the most powerful Hindu empire in South India. However, the decline of the power of this empire began with the joint invasion in 1565 by a coalition of neighboring Bahmani kingdoms. This Vijayanagara was defeated and destroyed. The current Anegundi Fort, located across the Tungabhadra River, was the main center of this monkey kingdom. The rocky mountains of Hampi like Hemakuta Hill, Matanga Hill, and Malyavanta Hill are mentioned in the Ramayana. The ancient name of Tungabhadra and the name of Parvati is Pampa, who married Shiva in the form of Virupaksha. This city is named after this name.
